Incident Investigation -- Tips, Techniques & Trivia

I'm in Banff today (May 4th) at the Petroleum Safety Conference co-presenting with Wally Cook from Kestrel Resources on Effective Investigations. Last month I was able to pilot my web based Incident Investigation Basics training with two groups of safety professionals and clients. Thanks to those who attended the sessions and more importantly provided the feedback.

Incident Investigation Basics
(Web Based Training)

The technology (GoToTraining.com) used in this training is sound and easy for clients to utilize; from my end it's somewhat like piloting a small aircraft. Sessions can be accessed by individuals at their computer or using web based conferencing it can be delivered in house to groups or teams. The first session is scheduled for mid June with two additional sessions to follow in each of July and August.

Now from my perspective it's a case of "build it and they will come (or not)".

Interviewing Using The PEACE Method

A number of police forces through the world are using a model of interviewing that is more information gathering as compared to obtaining a confession from a suspect. As we in the safety world are concerned with gathering information following an accident I thought the technique might be of interest to readers. The method incorporated is what I've been teaching for years, but the use of the mnemonic PEACE brings all the ideas together nicely.

P - Preparation and planning

E - Engage and explain

A - Account

C - Closure

E - Evaluate

I've deleted some police/legal concepts from the web based material and added a few comments of my own.
